Torlys Cork Flooring

Postby paulandave » Tue Mar 23, 2010 5:19 pm

My husband and I just took delivery of Torlys cork flooring for our kitchen, main floor powder room and main floor laundry room. What a disaster! The smell is terrrible - even bothering my husband. Apparently this is the natural scent of cork -be forewarned. It is not even installed yet.

Hi Paula,

Welcome to the EHAO bulletin board!

Thanks for the head's up! I often wondered how those cork floors would be.... Perhaps the smell is due to the toxic glues and finishes that they use in making them?

Cheers,

I've always thought cork floors were hypoallergenic, perfect for anyone with allergies. Was the smell coming from the planks itself or outside of the boxes, since it has not been installed? Have you contacted the store where you bought the floor from? From what I've read in reviews of Torlys floors, their cork line had great reviews, especially for its hypoallergenic properties.

Cheers,

Yes, I have contacted the flooring store as well as Torlys directly through facebook. Yes, the smell is from the natural scent of the cork with a new smell thrown in - not from the boxes. The flooring store wanted my husband to install the laundry room floor sealing the cork bottom and sides of each plank thus reducing the cork smell which my husband just finished doing. It helped minimally - thank heavens for a window and two doors! Torlys wants to send a rep which I think is a good idea. Apparently this scent will reduce with time but natural products do have a scent so I am told by Torlys. There is no way that I could have our kitchen done with this product given the size of the room and the difficulty in managing the offgassing. The main powder room is easily encapsulated so we may carry on with that room but that is it until we see the rep.

While cork has a natural scent, it is faint and does dissipate. The consumer, Paula Brown, did install the cork floor in the laundry and powder rooms with the kitchen being next. TORLYS sent a rep to check on her cork flooring and did not find any unusual scent from the floor. We are delighted that Paula is pleased with the product and her daughter will also be purchasing some TORLYS cork flooring for her house.

Thank you,
